In a span of about five minutes, two big pieces of news broke in the baseball world, both with strong ramifications for the Pirates.
Most pertinently, Jon Heyman reported catcher Russell Martin had signed with the Blue Jays, and Ken Rosenthal chimed in that the deal was for five (!) years and $82 (!!!) million. The deal exceeds even the most aggressive projections on what Martin would make this offseason. Just yesterday in fact, there were reports a deal with the Cubs seemed likely at around four years, $64 million. If you’re looking for a silver lining as a Pirates fan, it’s that no sane person would think the Pirates could or should match what Martin got from the Blue Jays. ...
